Today Channel 4 announced that Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig are the new hosts of Great British Bake Off. Noel and Sandi take over from favourites Mary Berry, Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc, who left amid controversy when the show moved from the BBC to somewhat edgier Channel 4.

Here at The Cake Mistress, we’re a lover of both Baking and Noel Fielding. So here are 9 reasons why we think Noel is the perfect choice as host for the Great British Bake Off:

1. He’s worked in a bakery

Noel worked in a bakery before, but was caught eating cakes when the boss came back. We all would, Noel, we all would.

2. He’s combined his work and Cake before

Most know Noel Fielding as a comedian, especially as half of comedy duo “The Mighty Boosh“. But he’s also an accomplished artist. He’s chosen iconic Soho patisserie Maison Bertaux as the exhibition space for his works.

3. He’s essentially The Mad Hatter

Noel is the closest person to The Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland. Who wouldn’t want a fantastical tea party with him?

4. He’s a sweetie himself

Noel Fielding is a sweetie. He appeals broadly across demographics from teens to grannies, helping The Great British Bake Off attract a new audience and keep existing fans.

5. He’s judged baked goods before

He’s already travelled to foreign lands and sampled their sweet sweet goods. Along with Richard Ayoade on other Channel 4 show, Travel Man, he’s given his verdict on food from across the globe.

6. He’s owned a cafe

Well, he’s played a cafe owner for a season on Luxury Comedy. Sure, it was in Hawaii, and on the side of a volcano, but those are transferable skills.

7. He’s the master of style and presentation

Baking and cakes are just as much about presentation as taste. We “eat with our eyes” so to speak. Noel Fielding is an Arts school graduate and accomplished Artist, having displayed his works in the Royal Albert Hall. Who better to judge the style and presentation of baked goods? He also frequently appears on GQ’s Best Dressed Lists.

8. He’s a National Treasure

While former host Mary Berry is undisputably a National Treasure, Noel is virtually a British national treasure now. He’s half of beloved comedy duo The Mighty Boosh, he’s played cult favourite Richmond Avenal on The IT Crowd, he was a long-standing team captain on Never Mind the Buzzcocks, has written and starred in the cult show Luxury Comedy, and starred in several movies.

9. Broad Appeal

His edgy goth aesthetic and presence helps send the message that baking isn’t just for grannies and girls. That’s a cause we can get behind.

We can’t wait to watch the new season of Great British Bake Off when it starts. Are you excited? What do you think about the new hosts? Will it be RIP GBBO or a hit?
