These golden syrup dumplings are balls of sugar dough that are either baked or simmered in caramel sugar syrup. I couldn’t think of anything better to eat on the first cold day of winter than a steaming bowl of dumplings right from the oven. They’re perfect served with a dollop of custard, cream or ice cream.

Here’s an old-fashioned one: a Golden Syrup Dumpling recipe.

GOLDEN SYRUP DUMPLINGS

Serves 4 people       Difficulty: Easy

EQUIPMENT:

Medium saucepan
Medium bowl
Large Baking dish

INGREDIENTS:

Dumplings

40g Butter, softened to room temperature
150g Self Raising Flour
1 large Egg, beaten
60ml Whole Cream Milk

Syrup

750ml Water
170g Golden Syrup
40ml Lemon Juice
60g Butter

METHOD:

Preheat oven to 190 degrees Celsius (170 fan-forced; 375F). Grease the bottom and sides of a deep pie dish with non-stick spray.

In a medium bowl add the butter and flour. Rub together with your fingers until all the flour is coated in butter. Add in the egg and milk. Stir together until a dough forms.

In a medium saucepan add the water, golden syrup, lemon juice and butter. Stir on medium heat until all the ingredients have dissolved. Bring the syrup to a boil.

Place teaspoons of dough into the pie dish. Pour the boiling syrup over the dumplings. Check the oven has reached the correct temperature, then place the pie dish in the middle of the oven. Bake until a skewer inserted into the middle of a dumpling comes out clean (20-30 minutes).

Remove from the oven. Serve the dumplings immediately with custard, cream, or ice cream.
